Lower Your Sodium Intake

Sodium, is an electrolyte found in salt that helps balance the fluids in our bodies. Everyone needs some of this in our diet, but how much is too much? According to the USDA, the maximum recommended daily intake of sodium is 2400mg per day. This equals about 1 teaspoon. Unfortunately, Americans on average consume about double that. Consuming too much salt can lead to health issues such as: high blood pressure, strokes, heart disease, heart failure and kidney disease. Depending on age and other health conditions, your doctor may put you on a diet with lower sodium limits.

Here are some tips on lowering the sodium in your diet:

Choose fresh fruits and vegetables when available.
When choosing canned fruits and vegetables, look for items with “no salt added”
Use spices and salt-free seasoning blends
